1 - It Can be done via system Registry editor.

There are four entries in the Outlook Registry Editor that help users limit the size of PST and OST files. Let's explore each of them.

MaxFileSize registry entry: 

This specifies the absolute maximum size of PST and OST files that it can grow to. Outlook does not allow you to increase the data file size beyond the maximum limit.

WarnFileSize registry entry:

 This specifies the maximum amount of data that .pst and .ost files can have. And when the maximum amount of data is reached, neither PST files nor OST files are allowed to add any data.

MaxLargeFileSize:

 Registry entry To set the maximum size to which an Outlook data file can be extended UNICODE.

WarnLargeFileSize registry entry

To set the maximum allowed data for Outlook (PST/OST) UNICODE data.


Tip -The WarnLargeFileSize and WarnFileSize registry entries prevent Outlook from warning you before the file size limit has been reached.

1:  Open the " Run " command and type " regedit ". Press Enter .

2:  Inside the Registry Editor, look at the left pane and under Computer, navigate to the following registry path according to your version of Outlook.


Outlook 2016:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\PST

Outlook 2013:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Outlook\PST

Outlook 2010:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Outlook\PST

Outlook 2007: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\PST

Outlook 2003:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\PST

3: Now right click Outlook >> expand " New " and then click " Key ".


4:  Type PST >> press ENTER .


5: Then right click on PST >> click on New >> then click on DWORD value .


6:  After That  type MaxFileSize >> and press ENTER twice .


7:  Now in the Edit DWORD Value window , first select the Decimal option in Base and enter a value in the Value field it should not be higher than 4294967295 (decimal) or ffffffff (hexadecimal). Click OK .


8: Repeat steps 3 to 7 to create another DWORD WarnFileSize but Don’t set this higher than 4090445042 (decimal) or f3cf3cf2 (hexadecimal).

In this example the maximum size of pst-files and ost-files has been set to 100GB with a warning at 95GB.

9:  Repeat steps 3 to 7 to create another DWORD MaxLargeFileSize.


10: Repeat steps 3 to 7 to create another WarnLargeFileSize DWORD.


11:  Now exit the Registry Editor.


Tip : Although the Registry path says “PST”, it also applies to ost-files..


2 - It Can Be done Via Group Policy Editor.

    Don’t set this higher than 4294967295
  • Large PST: Size to disable adding new content
